About the Process
When approaching a blank canvas, I start with a general concept but accept that my initial idea may have to be altered, or even abandoned, during the painting process otherwise the painting will be lost. Making the final painting work is somewhat of a negotiation with the painting itself.
The final direction of the piece is driven by my inspiration, movement, and emotion of the moment, and from life experiences. Music is a catalyst in my artwork; I find there to be a strong interrelationship between music and painting.
My artwork starts with a brushed underpainting of one to several colors and tones on a prepared canvas. Multiple applications of paint are then applied in a “gestural abstraction” or “action painting” method where paint is brushed, dripped, splashed, and blended onto the canvas creating movement and depth. I am an intuitive painter, a direct painter.
Depending on the nature of the individual piece there may be several to hundreds of applications of color added by these varied techniques over a period of days to months. All work is nonrepresentational.
The medium used is acrylic paint on premier canvas. In addition to canvases, commissioned artwork has also been done on sanded plywood, musical instruments, and clothing. Single canvas paintings currently vary in size from 24”x30” to 48”x72”. Diptychs and triptychs are also available.
